Sensor: Groppensteinschlucht gorge
The recently set up gorge route is an adventure for all the senses. Along the route your awareness is raised for the gorge and for your “5 senses”. Wild romantic landslide scenarios, stunning waterfalls, including the Groppenstein and Zechnerfall, and kolks will amaze you.
From Obervellach main square the hike proceeds along the Roman road to Raufen and the entrance to Groppensteinschlucht, which is a brook gorge, partly gorge-like with eroded rocks and model-like colk and two waterfalls, the Groppenstein and Zechnerfall.
After a short section of the route you get to an impressive section of the brook which has smaller waterfalls and impressive kolks. The path (partly secured) then proceeds through a ravine forest, dominated by spruce, heading up the mountain to the big Groppenstein waterfall, which plummets 30 m above a hard rocky level. The gorge then narrows and proceeds along rock faces to the start of the recently created steps. There is also an emergency exit area here out of the gorge, should you need it (signpost).
A new set of steps then starts here which is almost exclusively over an artistic footbridge. The footbridge proceeds high above the bottom of the valley and you get to it after about 300 m from the Zechnerfall. There is a viewing platform here from where you get to enjoy a wonderful view to the Zechnerwasserfall.
After heading out of the gorge a forest trail proceeds to information boards, from where you can get to Gasthaus Himmelbauer in about an hour.
A footpath with way markers also goes past Burg Groppenstein, back to the starting point of the gorge.
